Post-Summer Skin Repair

two women at the beach

In the summertime, often it’s all you can do to slather sunscreen all over you and everyone else’s noses, backs, and earlobes before hitting the beach—then it’s time to do it all over again! Who has time for an actual skincare routine when you’re on an actual vacation? But back to school time means back to skincare time. Let’s press reset on summer skin damage and get fresh-faced for fall!

WHAT HAPPENS TO SKIN OVER THE SUMMER?

It’s heavenly to be in the great outdoors, but more time in the sun means more exposure to damaging UV rays and pollution. While SPF is even more vital in the summer, a lack of regular cell turnover from a less consistent skincare routine and daydreaming instead of double cleansing can lead to an accumulation of sunscreen, grime, and excess sebum and dead cells. Let’s face it, we can’t fit all of our exfoliating products like AHAs and retinol in the carry-on! Summer damage can show up as pore congestion, rough texture and breakouts. Sometimes it’s sunspots and a lackluster, sluggish complexion.

The truth is, our at-home products often aren’t a good match for the beach, mountains, or different climate we’re summering in. Dehydration is common and can result in breakouts, superficial fine lines and can even make hyperpigmentation appear darker! Our skin feels the aftereffects of a summer well spent.

WHY DOES SKIN BREAK OUT AFTER SUMMER?

The accumulation of dead cells on our sunned-and-funned skin makes it harder for our skincare products to penetrate effectively and do their hydrating magic—and all that cellular debris and sebum can’t escape. The healthy “in and out” flow, as well as skin metabolism, is disrupted, leaving skin dull, clogged, and unresponsive.

AT THE CLINIC:

EXFOLIATION

A deep cleanse and thorough exfoliation are the fundamentals of La Suite founder Rhea Souhleris Grous’s facial philosophy. For those who need extractions, our talented facialists will leave no clogged pore unturned. Once skin is properly exfoliated using one of our modalities (Rhea’s favorite post-summer choice is microdermabrasion) as well as extractions, we can replenish depleted nutrients and hydration and get skin prepped for fall.

Microdermabrasion removes the dead, sluggish top layer of skin to retexturize and resurface with little or no downtime. Benefits include:

  • helps minimize fine lines and wrinkles
  • helps brighten and even skin tone
  • aids in the absorption of skincare products
  • visibly smooths and rejuvenates the skin so it looks cleaner
  • suitable for all skin types and conditions (except open lesions/acne)

HYDRATION

La Suite facials employ nutrient-rich hydrating serums and masks to offer immediate, intense hydration and support the benefits of physical exfoliation. Well hydrated skin boasts a healthy, plump, youthful appearance. Benefits include:

  • aids in the absorption of skincare products
  • helps visibly minimize fine lines and wrinkles
  • helps brighten and even skin tone and smooth texture
  • improves suppleness and elasticity
  • balances sebum production and reduces the chance of acne breakouts

AT HOME PRODUCTS:

To refresh congested, post-summer skin at home, Rhea recommends this treatment:

STEP 1 - Double cleanse. Use an oil-based cleanser like Environ Dual Action Pre-Cleansing Oil to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, followed by a second cleanser to erase every trace of dirt, pollution and excess sebum. Environ Hydrating Clay Masque is a great second cleanser for micro-exfoliation. Don’t let the name dissuade you - this is one of our favorite second cleansers! Remove with a wet washcloth for a gentle sweep of exfoliation. This best-selling duo is now available as a set!

STEP 2 - Apply an exfoliating mask.  Defenage 2-Minute Reveal Masque helps clear dead surface cells, debris and pollution.

STEP 3 - Deeply hydrate. Start with water-like Forlle’d Refining Lotion followed by Forlle’d P-Effect Essence. Both contain patented hyaluronic acid technology for maximum penetration.

STEP 4 - Reinforce the skin barrier with a replenishing moisturizer like La Suite Niacinamide Cream.

FACT. You can and should use retinol all-year round. It’s especially great at supporting cell turnover to help stimulate sluggish complexions. If you put yours down this summer, it’s time to pick it up again. Learn how.
